Who is Harish Rawat?

Harish Rawat is a senior leader of Congress. He has been the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Harish Rawat was born on 27 April 1948 in Mohanri village located in Almora district of Uttarakhand. He has been MP 5 times. He had been the Water Resources Minister in the 15th Lok Sabha in the government of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Harish Rawat has held the charge of Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Ministry of Agriculture along with Ministry of Labor and Employment at the Centre. In the 2017 assembly elections, Harish Rawat contested from two seats and lost the election while being the Chief Minister. In 2019, he lost badly to BJP’s Ajay Bhatt from Nainital-Udham Singh Nagar Lok Sabha seat.

Harish Rawat’s political journey so far

In 1990, Harish Rawat became a member of the Official Language Committee along with the Communications Minister. In 1992, he took over the post of National Vice President of All India Congress Seva Dal. He remained on this post till 1997. In 2001, he was made the President of Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress. In 2002, he was elected to Rajya Sabha. In 2009, he once again became the Minister of State for Labor and Employment. In the year 2011, he also got the charge of Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industry along with Parliamentary Affairs. Harish Rawat also held the Water Resources Ministry from 30 October 2012 to 31 January 2014.

Till 2014, Harish Rawat was an important face of Uttarakhand, who was discussed even at the Centre. Harish Rawat’s name was at the top among the powerful leaders of Congress. The state of Uttarakhand was established on 9 November 2000 and in the 2012 assembly elections, his name was the strongest in the race for Chief Minister. But Vijay Bahuguna was made the Chief Minister in his place.

Then suddenly something happened that within a year Harish Rawat was sitting on the CM’s chair. In fact, due to allegations of alleged failure of the state government in dealing with the Kedarnath disaster in June 2013, Bahuguna was removed from the post of CM and Harish Rawat was given the command of the state.
