British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has urged the heads of the country’s universities to work towards preventing incidents related to anti-Semitic prejudice growing on campuses due to reactions related to the Israel-Hamas war and to work towards removing the disruption being caused in studies.

‘Will not tolerate anti-Semitic abuse’

Downing Street, the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister, said that Sunak and his ministers will meet university vice-chancellors to ensure that anti-Semitic abuse will not be tolerated on all campuses. A complete zero tolerance policy will be adopted on this matter.

‘Debate and open exchange of ideas are essential‘

The government said it wanted to make it clear that debate and open exchange of ideas are essential in universities but they cannot become a means of hate speech, harassment or inciting violence. Sunak said, “Universities should have debate but they should also become centers of tolerance and respect for every member of their community.”
