Italy Population: Pope Francis worried about Italy’s falling population, PM Georgia Meloni started this great campaign
Pope Francis urged Italians to have more children and warned that the country’s demographic crisis threatens the future. The Pope also called for long-term policies to help families.
Addressing a programme, he said that without children and youth, a country has no future. The birth rate in Italy is already very low and has been falling continuously for 15 years. It reached a record low last year.
Campaign to give birth to 5 million babies every year
Last year, 379,000 babies were born in the country. With strong support from the Vatican, the government of Italian Prime Minister Giordano Meloni has launched a campaign to encourage the birth of at least 500,000 babies annually by 2033.
Campaign is necessary to prevent the economy from collapsing
Demographic experts say that this rate is necessary to prevent the economy from collapsing under the burden of Italy’s aging population. During this time the Pope said that there is a fact which a demographer told me. Right now the investments that give the most revenue are arms factories and contraceptives. One destroys life, the other stops life.
