Patanjali’s Soan Papdi sample fails, three people including employee jailed

Yoga Guru Ramdev Baba’s troubles are showing no sign of diminishing. Now, after one of Patanjali’s products failed and three people were punished, Patanjali is once again in the news. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Pithoragarh has imposed a fine along with six months’ imprisonment on the shopkeeper and the assistant general manager and distributor of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited, the company, after the sample of Patanjali’s Cardamom Soan Papdi failed.

6 months jail sentence

In fact, on May 18, Abhishek Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Patanjali Ayurved Limited, Ajay Joshi, Assistant Manager of Kanha Ji Distributor Private Limited Ramnagar and shopkeeper Leeladhar Pathak have been sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. Besides, fine has also been imposed on all three. The accused have been sentenced under relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Pithoragarh Food Safety Officer Rajesh Sharma said that on September 17, 2019, samples of Patanjali Navratna Cardamom Soan Papdi were taken from Liladhar Pathak’s shop located in Berinag Market. The sample was sent to Udham Singh Nagar Government Laboratory. Where Sonpapadi was found unsafe during investigation in the year 2020.

After this, the company got the sample tested from the Central Lab located in Ghaziabad, but in the test report from the Central Lab also, Soan Papdi was found in the category of unsafe. After this, a case was registered against Berinag shop owner Leeladhar Pathak, distributor Ajay Joshi and Patanjali’s assistant manager Abhishek Kumar.

While hearing the entire case on Saturday, the court of Chief New Magistrate Pithoragarh Sanjay Singh has sentenced the three accused to 6 months imprisonment under Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Whereas, shopkeeper Leeladhar Pathak has been fined Rs 5,000 and Ajay Joshi, assistant manager of Kanha Ji Distributor Private Limited, Ramnagar, has been fined Rs 10,000.

Apart from this, Abhishek Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited Unit III, Patanjali Food and Herbal Park Laksar, has been sentenced to a fine of Rs 25 thousand. If the fine is not paid, one will have to face additional punishment of 7 days. Assistant Prosecution Officer Ritesh Verma appeared on behalf of the complainant in the case.
