Truth and Reality

Demand for electricity suddenly increased by 25% in Uttarakhand, government treasury is getting empty for daily supply

Uttarakhand, which once dreamt of becoming an energy state, is today losing crores of rupees from the treasury due to energy purchase. The situation is such that the state is not able to meet its demand by generating electricity on its own, let alone the electricity it is getting from the central pool. On the other hand, due to various weather reasons, the increase in temperature has taken the energy crisis for the state to new heights. Talking about the latest figures, due to the unbridled heat in the state, the demand for energy has reached 58 million units, which is the largest figure for energy consumption till date.

The extreme heat this time is being considered the reason for this situation in the state. However, there are many other reasons for this. However, the Energy Corporation is currently saying that everything is under control, but the reality is that if these conditions persist for a long time, a big problem can arise. Understand point-wise what the problems are.

Increasing demand for electricity

  • Electricity consumption in Uttarakhand increased by 25 percent in just one year this time
  • Consumption of 44 million units last year reached 58 million units this time
  • Increasing temperature in the current year has taken the demand to new heights
  • Growth of industries, increase in construction activity and AC load are also big reasons
  • Irrigation load also increased this year due to lack of rain
  • 10 to 12 million units of electricity is being purchased every day
  • Crores of rupees are being spent every day for purchasing electricity

The Energy Corporation claims that despite the acute shortage of electricity, the supply is being met by purchasing electricity from the Indian Energy Exchange. There is no power cut anywhere in the state. At the places where there is power cut, it is happening either due to line fault, or there is a problem due to blown fuse. In such a situation, the officials of the Energy Corporation are seen appealing to conserve energy.

On the other hand, the Meteorological Department fears that the heat may increase even more in the coming time. There is a possibility of increase in temperature in the month of June. In such a situation, it is certain that the supply of energy is going to be a big challenge for the energy corporation in the coming days. However, on this matter also, the officials of the corporation are claiming to keep the supply smooth through future plans. Amidst all these claims, people are talking about many kinds of problems these days by talking about power cuts. They are also saying that everyday work is also getting affected due to lack of electricity in the midst of heat.

Not making new projects became a problem for Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand was also considered as an energy state because all the important rivers originate from this Himalayan state. In such a situation, on the basis of the capacity of Uttarakhand’s hydro project, it was considered possible to generate several hundred million units of electricity in the state. But due to the objection of many environmentalists and the short-sightedness of the state governments, these projects could never be completed. Not only this, many projects got stuck in limbo after spending crores.

Central Navratna companies are also losing hope

The big companies of the country that came to work on projects related to hydropower projects in Uttarakhand are also now seen pulling back. These Navratna companies have also finally started closing their offices from Uttarakhand after the current status of the projects and a long wait. Actually, national companies like NHPC, SJVN, NTPC have been working on hydropower projects in Uttarakhand. But at present, there are some of their projects which they started and after investing hundreds of crores of rupees, they are hanging in the balance. In such a situation, now these companies are seen giving up hope of starting work again soon.

The special thing is that due to such circumstances, there is less possibility of the situation regarding energy in Uttarakhand getting better. That is why the state government also seems to be putting more hope towards solar energy.
