Uttarakhand: The government and administration are fully alert to make the Chardham Yatra safe and convenient for the devotees – Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar

The Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand has witnessed a significant increase in the number of devotees this year. Under the leadership and guidance of Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, efforts are being made to monitor and manage the Yatra smoothly. Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar has been appointed as the Secretary-in-Charge of Rudraprayag district to implement a comprehensive plan focused on the three pillars of safety, convenience and orderliness, which will make the Chardham Yatra smooth for all devotees.

Dr. Rajesh, after the first meeting with the Rudraprayag district administration, including police, disaster management, transport and health services, identified the key areas that need immediate attention. Subsequently, several review meetings were also held to ensure the preparedness of the administration to effectively handle the large number of devotees.

As the area is vulnerable to landslides in the rainy season, disaster management is a top priority. The irrigation department has JCB machines and other heavy equipment ready that can quickly clear landslides, such as the one at Sirobgadh. These machines are on 24/7 standby, with a dedicated team monitoring high-risk areas to respond swiftly and minimise disruptions.

“We are facing a challenge in the initial phase due to the large number of devotees visiting, but it also provides an opportunity to serve them better through better planning, preparation and execution”, said Dr Rajesh.

The Rudraprayag district administration, in collaboration with SSP Rudraprayag and other district officials, has mobilised government manpower to handle the increased flow of vehicles. New parking areas have been created, and expansion of existing ones has been organised to avoid overcrowding.

Trained police officers are managing the flow of traffic and assisting devotees in finding parking spaces. Helicopter services have been improved with clear timetables and booking systems, to minimise overcrowding and waiting time. Strict safety checks have also been implemented to ensure a safe journey for all.

Maintaining hygiene is important for the health of devotees. Sanitation facilities such as additional toilets have been set up along the route. A dedicated team regularly cleans and maintains these facilities. To ensure food safety, regular inspections are carried out at eateries and only certified vendors are allowed to operate, ensuring that the food is safe and nutritious.

Medical posts have been set up along the yatra route, equipped with necessary medical equipment and manned by qualified personnel. Ambulances and emergency medical teams are on standby to provide assistance immediately. The use of mules is essential for carrying the pilgrims to Kedarnath so special veterinary services are being provided to keep the mules healthy and fit. Regular check-ups, treatment and adequate rest and food facilities are ensured for the health of the mules.

Dr. Rajesh said that “Under the guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, the administration is ready to face any challenge. The new measures implemented at the ground level will enhance the Chardham Yatra experience to a great extent”.
