Pakistan: After 6 years, former Prime Minister of Pakistan became the President of PML-N, Nawaz Sharif elected unopposed

Nawaz Sharif, three-time prime minister of Pakistan, was elected unopposed as PML-N president in the party elections held in Lahore on Tuesday. No candidate filed nomination papers against Nawaz in the party elections. He lost this post after the Supreme Court’s decision in the Panama Papers case.

PML-N Chief Election Commissioner Rana Sanaullah issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday, after which Nawaz Sharif’s presidential election will be confirmed in the PML-N General Council meeting to be held at a hotel in Lahore. Nawaz Sharif is also a presidential candidate. However, after Shahbaz Sharif stepped down, senior leaders had also urged him to return to lead the party.

Earlier, his party shared a video of preparations for the General Council meeting, saying, “The lions are returning to take their rightful place at the top.” According to a report in Dawn newspaper, the PML-N had earlier announced to convene the General Council meeting on May 11, but it was postponed to celebrate 26 years of Pakistan becoming a nuclear power. Sharif was the Prime Minister when Pakistan conducted six nuclear tests on May 28, 1998.
