The prisoners of war, including four civilians of Ukraine, were transported to the northern Sumy region in several buses. As soon as they got off the bus, they started shouting in joy and called their families to inform them about their return to their homeland. Some people sat on their knees and started kissing the ground while many people wrapped themselves in yellow-blue flags and hugged each other and started crying bitterly. Officials said that some time before the exchange of prisoners of war, both sides had also handed over the bodies of the soldiers to each other at the same place.
Prisoners of war swapped for the 52nd time
This is the fourth time prisoners of war have been swapped this year and the 52nd time since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The United Arab Emirates said it had facilitated the latest swap. According to the Ukraine Coordination Headquarters for Treatment of POWs, a total of 3,210 Ukrainian military personnel and civilians have returned to the country since the war began.
