14 pilgrims from Jordan who went for Hajj died due to extreme heat, five people from Iran also lost their lives

At least 14 pilgrims from Jordan who went to perform Hajj in Saudi Arabia died due to extreme heat. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed this. He said that 17 other pilgrims went missing during the Hajj pilgrimage. However, the ministry is constantly in touch with Saudi officials regarding this.

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, “14 pilgrims from Jordan died, while 17 pilgrims went missing during the Hajj pilgrimage.” According to the media, the citizens died after suffering a stroke due to extreme heat. The ministry said that talks are going on with Saudi officials to bury the pilgrims in Saudi Arabia or transfer them to Jordan.

Iranian pilgrims also died

Iran also said that five of its pilgrims died during the Haj pilgrimage. However, they did not confirm the cause of death. Saudi Arabia has also not yet issued an official statement regarding those who lost their lives. Saudi Health Ministry spokesman Mohammad Al-Abdulali said that 2,760 pilgrims died of sunstroke and heatstroke on Sunday. He further said that the number is likely to increase. Along with this, he appealed to the pilgrims not to go out in the afternoon and asked them to keep themselves hydrated.

The temperature in Mecca is likely to reach 47 degrees Celsius on Monday. The Haj pilgrimage will conclude on Wednesday. Last year, 240 people died during the Haj pilgrimage. Most of those who died were from Indonesia. The causes of death were not disclosed. A Saudi official said that last year one thousand cases of heat-related illness were registered, out of which 10 percent were heat stroke cases.
