The CBI team investigating in Bihar was called ‘fake’ and people attacked, 4 arrested so far

When the CBI team probing the UGC-NET case reached Bihar’s Nawada district to investigate and question some suspects, people mistook them for a fake CBI team and attacked them. As the case was high profile, the Bihar Police immediately became active and started action by arresting four people in the case.
It is being said that a team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which was investigating the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the UGC-NET examination, was allegedly attacked by local people in Bihar’s Nawada, after which the police arrested four people on the complaint of the central agency.
Giving this information on Sunday, Bihar Police officials said that the incident took place on Saturday evening when a CBI team had gone to Kasiyadih village in the area. Regarding the incident, the Nawada Superintendent of Police office said in a statement on Sunday, “A team of CBI officials was surrounded, beaten and attacked by a group of villagers in Kasiyadih village under Rajauli police station at around 4.30 pm on Saturday evening.”
The statement said, “Immediately after receiving the information, a team of police officers led by Rajauli police station in-charge reached the spot and pacified the villagers after which the situation came under control.”
Attacked thinking it to be a fake team
The police have registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested four people. Sources said that it is believed that the driver of the CBI vehicle suffered minor injuries in the attack. According to local police officials, the villagers thought that the people were fake, who were lying and claiming to be CBI officers. They had come to the village in search of some suspects allegedly involved in the UGC-NET question paper leak case, whose mobile numbers revealed that these people were suspects.
A senior police officer in Nawada, on condition of anonymity, said, “CBI officials were looking for a villager Phoolchand in connection with the UGC-NET question paper case. They seized two mobile phones from Phoolchand’s house.”
Officials in Delhi said that the local police have registered an FIR against the accused for obstructing government work and assault, among other charges. On the instructions of the Union Education Ministry, the CBI on Thursday registered an FIR against unknown persons in the UGC-NET paper leak case. The National Examination Agency (NTA) conducted the UGC-NET-2024 examination in two shifts across the country on June 18 for the selection of junior research fellows, assistant professors and PhD scholars.
Sources said that the next day the University Grants Commission received information from the National Cyber Crime Risk Analysis Unit of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) that the paper was available on the ‘darknet’ and was allegedly being sold for Rs five-six lakh.
According to the complaint of the Ministry of Education, the information received from I4C, an organization working under the Union Home Ministry, “prima facie indicates that the sanctity of the examination has been compromised,” officials said.
