Russia Terror Attack: Russia’s Dagestan region shaken by terrorist attacks
The death toll in Russia’s southern region of Dagestan rose to 21 after a police officer injured in an attack by Islamic terrorists died, officials said on Tuesday. In the attack on Sunday, terrorists targeted a church and a Jewish synagogue. Police were also fired upon in the Muslim-dominated cities of Derbent and Makhachkala in the North Caucasus. There is a lot of anger among the people of Russia after the terrorist attack.
Deadliest attack since March
This attack is the deadliest attack in Russia since March. In March, 145 people were killed in firing by gunmen in a Moscow suburb. The group affiliated with the Islamic State organization in Afghanistan, which claimed responsibility for the attack in March, praised the Dagestan attack and said that it was carried out by “brothers in the Caucasus who are demonstrating that they are strong.”
Attackers killed
Russia’s top state criminal investigation agency, the Investigative Committee, said all five attackers were killed. Mavsum Regimov, the head of the Derbent region, said on Tuesday that a police sergeant died of his injuries in hospital, bringing the total death toll to 21. The dead included 16 police personnel. Medical officials in Dagestan said on Monday that at least 46 people were injured, 13 of them police. The dead included a 66-year-old Russian Orthodox priest.
