Europe changes baseline for measuring high blood pressure
The European Society of Cardiology has changed the baseline for measuring high blood pressure, leading to a debate among cardiologists here on what the standard should be. The ESC has changed the baseline from the current 130/80 mm/hg to 140/90 mm/hg. Following this, the Cardiology Society of India has taken the stance that it will be 130/80 mm/hg for those below 60 years of age and 140/90 mm/hg for those above. In the US, the baseline is still 130/80.
Many young patients suffer from high blood pressure
Dr Ravishankar of CSI said, we have many young patients suffering from high blood pressure. They have been coming since the age of 30 and they need effective management. So now we believe the Cardiology Society of India has adopted the stance that it will be 130/80/ mm/hg for those below 60 years of age and 140/ mm/hg for those above. The baseline in the US remains 130/80. Stress, lifestyle changes, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, genetic predisposition are some of the causes of heart problems.
