‘The Speaker treated the opposition step-motherly today’, Mallikarjun Kharge said- I was ignored

Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday alleged that he wanted to raise the issue of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Graduate (NEET-UG) in the Upper House, but Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar deliberately ignored him to humiliate him. Kharge also claimed that the Chairman’s behavior towards the opposition was step-motherly. On the other hand, amid the uproar by opposition members in Rajya Sabha, cornering the government in the NEET-UG exam paper leak case, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said in the House that Leader of Opposition Kharge himself came in front of the chair, which had never happened before.

The Chairman made this comment when the opposition members were continuously creating a ruckus during the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address. Opposition members were creating a ruckus since the start of the House proceedings this morning demanding a discussion on the issues related to alleged irregularities related to NEET-UG, the ‘failure’ of the National Examination Agency (NTA) and paper leak. Later, Kharge posted on ‘X’, “70 papers have been leaked in the last seven years, the Modi government has betrayed crores of youth.” He said, “We wanted to raise the voice of lakhs of youth who have suffered by discussing the NEET scam in the House under Rule 267. Therefore, to draw attention to the problem of the people, we asked for a special discussion. We did not want to trouble anyone. We only wanted to raise the issues of the students, but he (the Chairman) did not give it a chance, did not pay attention to it.” Kharge’s allegation – step-motherly treatment with the opposition He alleged that his behavior towards the opposition today was step-motherly. He claimed, “The Chairman was only looking at the ruling party. I raised my hand, stood up, followed parliamentary decorum and rules for 10 minutes to attract his attention, but still he did not look at the Leader of Opposition in the House. Kharge said, “When the Leader of Opposition draws his attention as per the rules, he should look at him, but instead, he deliberately ignored me to humiliate me, I have to either go inside or shout very loudly. So I will definitely say that this is the fault of the Chairman.”
