Uttarakhand: OBC reservation in bodies… after change in the Act, now the rules will be amended

The way for the civic elections stuck due to the delay in deciding OBC reservation in Uttarakhand is now going to be cleared. It is believed that after accepting the recommendations of the single commission, the government will now complete the process of OBC reservation within 15 days. After the gazetted notification of amendment in OBC reservation in the Act is issued, the amendment process in the rules of Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Municipality Act) will be completed in a few days. Then objections and suggestions will be sought at the level of District Magistrate. After this process, the role of the State Election Commission will begin.
Let us tell you that with the amendment in the Act, OBC reservation in the bodies will exceed 14 percent. Under the recommendations of the single-member dedicated commission, there may be an increase in the seats of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairman, Municipal Chairman, Nagar Panchayat President to Councilor, Councilor, Ward Member in all the municipal bodies. According to sources, reservation for Mayor in Municipal Corporations may increase from 14 to 18.05 percent, reservation for Chairman in Nagar Palikas may increase from 14 to 28.10 and reservation for Chairman in Nagar Panchayats may increase from 14 to 38.97 percent. The number of reserved seats will not exceed 50 percent of the total seats.
This is why the need arose
Due to uniformity of OBC reservation in the state, even the bodies with four and five percent OBC population had reservation up to 14 percent. After the amendment on the recommendation of a single dedicated commission, now the reservation will be determined on the basis of seats where OBC population is more, but it will not exceed 50 percent.
The Act has been amended to increase OBC reservation. But it will be applicable only when there is a provision for it in the rules. The process of amendment in the rules has started. This entire process may take more than 15 days at the government and departmental level.
