Wimbledon: Sumit Nagal could not impress in the third Grand Slam of the year, lost in the first round and was eliminated

India’s star singles tennis player Sumit Nagal could not impress in the third Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon, and had to face defeat in the first round itself. Nagal made 44 unforced errors in the first round match against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic and was eliminated after losing the match that lasted four sets.

Nagal, who was participating in the men’s singles main draw for the first time, lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 in a match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes. Nagal won one set against world number 53 Kecmanovic. The 26-year-old, ranked 72nd from India, also hit 47 winners but overall he struggled on the grass court. In the end, Nagal was able to score only 104 points as compared to Kecmanovic’s 122 points.

The Serbian player hit six aces and made only two double faults. This is Kecmanovic’s second win in two matches against Nagal. He also defeated Nagal in the ATP 250 tournament in Cologne, Germany four years ago. Nagal, who has qualified for the Paris Olympics, is the first Indian to play a Wimbledon men’s singles main draw match in five years. Prajnesh Gunneswaran was knocked out in the first round in 2019.

The performance was excellent in the current season

Nagal has had a great current season. He also qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open earlier this year. He defeated 31st seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the opening round and became the first Indian male tennis player to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam in 35 years. Nagal also qualified for the main draw of the ATP 1000 tournament Indian Wells Masters and Monte Carlo Masters. The Indian has won two Challenger tournaments this season, Heilbronn Challenger and Chennai Open ATP Challenger. He also participated in the French Open but lost in the opening round.
