New history written in Iran’s presidential election, reformist leader Pezeshkian defeated hardliner Jalili by 28 lakh votes
There has been a huge upset in Iran’s presidential election. Iran’s reformist leader Pezeshkian has written a new history by defeating hardliner Saeed Jalili by a huge margin of 28 lakh votes. This is being seen as a period of major changes in Iran. Let us tell you that in the direct contest between the two top candidates in the voting held last week for the presidential election, reformist leader Masoud Pezeshkian defeated hardliner Saeed Jalili and won on Saturday.
It is worth noting that after the death of President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in Iran last month, voting was held on Friday between Pezeshkian and Jalili in a direct contest. Pezeshkian was declared victorious with 1 crore 63 lakh votes, while Jalili got 1 crore 35 lakh votes. Earlier on June 28, in the initial round of voting, no candidate got more than 50 percent of the votes, due to which there was a direct contest between the top two candidates.
Celebrations on the streets of Tehran for Pezeshkian’s victory
As Pezeshkian’s lead strengthened, his supporters took to the streets in Tehran and other cities to celebrate. These elections have taken place at a time when there is widespread tension in West Asia over the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and Iran has been facing an economic crisis for the past several years. Masoud Pezeshkian is inclined towards former President Hassan Rouhani, under whose rule Tehran signed the historic 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. However, the nuclear deal was cancelled and hardline leaders regained power. Cardiologist Masoud (69) is in favour of re-signing the nuclear deal and improving relations with Western countries.
