Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Prachanda resigns, Oli may become the new Prime Minister
In Nepal, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has resigned. He lost the confidence vote in Parliament. In fact, CPM-UML had withdrawn support from the government. In the 275-member House of Representatives, 194 votes were cast against Prachanda’s confidence vote and 63 in support. 138 votes were needed to win the confidence vote.
Now, CPN-UML President KP Sharma Oli, supported by the Nepali Congress, is ready to take over as the new PM. In the 275-member House of Representatives, only 63 members supported the proposal presented by Prachanda, while 194 strongly opposed it. At the same time, Prachanda’s third term starting from December 2022 was constantly being challenged by coalition partners. He had to present the confidence vote 5 times. He passed 4 but failed the fifth. Immediately after Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire announced Prachanda’s defeat, members were seen congratulating KP Sharma Olo.
Oli can become the new PM
It is believed that Oli and Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba will jointly meet President Ram Chandra Paudel with the signatures of MPs of both the parties and stake claim to appoint Oli as the new PM. Both the parties have the support of a total of 167 members in the House. The new government will have to win the trust vote in Parliament within 30 days of its formation.
