Fire breaks out in cargo ship in the middle of the sea in Goa, three ICG ships deployed for 20 hours

Three ships of the Indian Coast Guard are conducting firefighting operations to extinguish the massive fire on the MV Maersk Frankfurt cargo ship. A large amount of dangerous chemical cargo was being carried in this ship.

Let us tell you that this operation is being conducted by three ICG ships Sujit, Sachet and Samrat. A cargo ship caught fire near Karwar in Karnataka on Friday. The three ships are continuously trying to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further for more than 20 hours.

Sujit, Sachet and Samrat deployed for 20 hours

The Indian Coast Guard said in its latest update that, ‘Indian Coast Guard ships Sujit, Sachet and Samrat have been trying to control the fire for more than 20 hours, so that the fire can be prevented from spreading. As of 7 am on July 20, ICG Dornier aircraft from Goa is conducting aerial assessment of the ship, as well as an additional aircraft from Kochi is deployed for search and rescue. ETV Water Lily departed from Mumbai on July 19 and reached the site by July 21.’

Operation being carried out to ensure safety of crew

Late Friday night, the Indian Coast Guard control room in Mumbai received information about a major fire on board MV Maersk Frankfurt 50 nm from shore. ICG Dornier and ships Sachet, Sujeet and Samrat were immediately dispatched for action. An additional aircraft was also mobilised to augment search and rescue efforts. Firefighting operations are being carried out to prevent disaster and ensure safety of the ship and crew, the Coast Guard said.

The ship has been advised to change its course and is currently sailing on a course of 180 at a speed of 6 knots. However, south-westerly winds and strong waves are posing challenges in extinguishing the fire.
