Due to this reason Vinesh Phogat was not given the silver medal, CAS released a detailed report
The athlete who was most discussed in the Paris Olympics was India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the final in the women’s 50 kg wrestling event. Her weight was found to be 100 grams more.
After being disqualified, she also appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports i.e. CAS to be given a silver medal. Which was later rejected. In such a situation, now CAS has released a detailed report (CAS Full Verdict on Vinesh Phogat). In which the reason behind dismissing Vinesh’s case has been given.
CAS Full Verdict on Vinesh Phogat
CAS has released a detailed report in the Vinesh Phogat medal case. In which it is said that, “The single bench hearing the case has concluded that the applicant participated in the 50 kg wrestling category of her own free will and she was well aware that she would have to maintain a weight below 50 kg for the competition.” CAS further said, “Article 7 of the rules makes it clear that every athlete is considered to be participating at his own will and is responsible for himself. He is only entitled to compete in a weight category, which corresponds to the weight he had at the time. The applicant is an experienced wrestler, who previously competed under the rules. There is no evidence that she did not understand the weight requirements. She voluntarily entered the 50 kg category and there is a rule to maintain that weight limit.”
Rules are same for all
Talking about equality, he further said, “The rules regarding the weight limit are clear and are the same for all participants. No exemption is provided for this (upper limit). It is clearly the responsibility of the athlete to stay below that limit. There is no dispute that the applicant’s weight was above the limit. Her case is that her weight was only 100 grams more and she should be given exemption for it, because this happens due to drinking water and especially during the phase before menstruation (periods).”
She was disqualified before the final
