Jignesh Mevani was expelled from Gujarat Assembly, marshals had to be called

On the last day of the monsoon session of the Gujarat Assembly on Friday, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani was expelled from the House on the instructions of Speaker Shankar Chaudhary for creating a ruckus during a discussion and reaching the Chair. After the Speaker ordered Mevani’s expulsion, the marshals removed him from the House without the use of any force. During a discussion on the seizure of drugs by the Gujarat Police, Mevani stood up and started shouting at the ruling party and challenged the BJP government to discuss other ‘burning’ issues like rape.

Jignesh Mevani expelled from the House

Mevani, the working president of Gujarat Congress, came to the middle of the House. He challenged Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi to hold a debate on tragedies like the fire in the Rajkot Game Zone, the collapse of the Morbi bridge and the boat capsized in Vadodara, which should be telecast live on television. Despite repeated requests by the Speaker to maintain decorum, MLA Mevani stood up near his seat and demanded a discussion and reached in front of the Chair, following which the Speaker expelled him. Condemning Mevani’s behaviour, Choudhary said that the Congress MLA has disrespected the Constitution by such an act.

Mevani’s behaviour unacceptable

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs Ramanlal Vora, Jitu Vaghani and minister Rishikesh Patel termed Mevani’s behaviour “unacceptable” and said that he was only interested in getting publicity. Sanghvi later responded to a “matter of urgent public importance” raised by BJP MLA Bharat Patel regarding the seizure of drugs. Sanghvi later told the House that the police have recovered unclaimed drugs worth Rs 850 crore from the coastal areas of Gujarat in the last 15 days. In the last one year, the police have arrested 431 people involved in illegal drug trade and seized drugs worth Rs 5,640 crore.
