Uttarakhand: Consensus reached in the meeting of the Select Committee, civic elections will be held on the basis of 2011 census! No solution found on OBC reservation
The picture regarding the civic elections in Uttarakhand seems to be getting clear to some extent. On Saturday, a meeting of the Select Committee was held regarding OBC reservation in the civic elections. Although no solution was found on OBC reservation in the meeting, but civic elections are now expected to be held by December. The upcoming civic elections can also be conducted on the basis of the 2011 census.
At the same time, the Dhami government has also given an affidavit in the Uttarakhand High Court to release the civic election program before November 9 and to complete it before December 25. In fact, a meeting of the Select Committee constituted for reservation in the civic elections was held today on Saturday, October 5, in the Dehradun Assembly building. The meeting lasted for about one and a half hours.
The Assembly Speaker has appointed Urban Development Minister Premchand Aggarwal as the chairman of this Select Committee. MLAs Vinod Chamoli, Munna Singh Chauhan, Khajan Das, Shahzad Ali, Mamta Rakesh and Harish Dhami are members of the committee.
After the meeting, the chairman of the committee and Urban Development Minister Premchand Agarwal said that all the members of the Select Committee put forth their views and the committee has come to the decision that the civic elections can be held on the basis of the 2011 census just like in 2018. However, the subject of OBC reservation is very big and it is very important not only for this civic election, but also for future elections and many other subjects where OBC reservation is applicable.
Therefore, the Select Committee has decided that it will discuss this subject further and will take about a month more from the Speaker of the Assembly. At the same time, Congress MLA and Select Committee member Harish Dhami said that the government has given a program till December in the High Court for the civic elections and the government has given this in the court in the form of an affidavit. Therefore, the government will have to conduct the civic elections in December.
Congress MLA Harish Dhami said that as far as OBC reservation is concerned, it will not make any difference to the elections. Elections can be held according to the 2011 census. On this basis, civic elections were also held in 2018. He said that the government has to take a decision regarding the elections and the government has already given an affidavit in the court regarding the release of the election program in November.
Let us tell you that the Select Committee constituted on the Municipal Corporation Amendment Bill has to submit its report to the Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri before October 9, but now the committee is asking for one more month to submit the report. It is worth noting that on September 9, the Assembly Secretariat had issued a notification for the formation of the Select Committee. After this, the first meeting of the constituted committee was held on September 18.
