The statue of the goddess of justice was changed, the blindfold was removed
Often you must have seen the statue of the Goddess of Justice with a blindfold on her eyes in the courts, films and chambers of lawyers of the country. But now the eyes of the Goddess of Justice of the new India have opened. Even the Constitution has come in place of the sword in her hand. Actually, some time ago the laws of the British have been changed and now the Indian judiciary has also started adopting a new look, leaving behind the British era.
The blindfold on the Goddess’s eyes has been removed
Not only has the symbol of the Supreme Court been changed, but the blindfold on the Goddess of Justice’s eyes for years has also been removed. It is clear that the Supreme Court has given a message to the country that now the ‘law is not blind’. Let us tell you that all this exercise has been done by the CJI of the Supreme Court, DY Chandrachud. A similar statue has been installed in the judges’ library in the Supreme Court.
Constitution in place of sword
On the instructions of CJI Chandrachud, the statue of the Goddess of Justice was made afresh. First of all, a big statue has been installed in the judges’ library. The earlier statue of the Goddess of Justice had a bandage on both her eyes. In the new statue, the eyes of the Goddess of Justice are open and there is no bandage. Also, there used to be a scale in one hand and a sword in the other, a symbol of punishment. However, now the Constitution has replaced the sword in the hands of the statue of the Goddess of Justice. The scales in the other hand of the statue are as before.
Why was the statue changed?
According to sources, CJI Chandrachud believed that we have to move beyond the British legacy. The law is never blind, it sees everyone equally. Therefore, the form of the goddess of justice should be changed. Also, the goddess should have the Constitution in one hand instead of a sword, so that the message goes to the society that she dispenses justice according to the Constitution. The scale in the other hand is correct because everyone is equal in her eyes.
