Germany’s EMBL researcher and scientist from Virginia School of Medicine together revealed that yeast cells are effective in fighting cancer. According to research published in ‘Nature Communications’, a brewing yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S. pombe), can hibernate in a simple way.
Dr. Ahmed Joma, a researcher in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics of UVA, said, “So we need to understand the basics of adaptation to starvation and also how these cells become inactive to survive and avoid death.
Why study beer yeast for cancer?
S. pombe has been used to make wine for a long time. This has also been good for scientists. Brewer’s yeast has a lot of similarities with human cells. Due to which it becomes a good tool to understand the cellular processes in both cancer cells.
The research team has made a surprising discovery by using cutting-edge techniques called cryo-electron microscopy and tomography as a powerful 3D microscope. When yeast cells suffer starvation, they cover the cellular batteries i.e. mitochondria in an unexpected layer.
This layer made up of inactive ribosomes is mostly for the production of proteins in the cell. As we know that the cells will work to turn off their ribosomes and run the energy. But it was attached on top of the mitochondria.
