NC-Congress boycotted the foundation day of Jammu and Kashmir UT

On the 5th foundation day of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, an official event was organized in Srinagar on Thursday, which was boycotted by the MLAs of the ruling party National Conference and Congress.

Congress and NC said that they do not consider Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. Jammu and Kashmir should get statehood as soon as possible. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has described this as the double character of both the parties.

The LG said that the leaders of Congress and NC have taken oath of the Constitution as MLAs of Jammu and Kashmir UT. Then how can they boycott the official event. On the one hand they became MLAs by taking oath, on the other hand they are boycotting the official program. This shows their double character.

In fact, in 2019, while removing Article 370 and 35A, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were made two union territories. At that time itself, the government had assured to restore the status of full statehood when the situation in the state becomes normal. BJP had also reiterated this in the recent state assembly elections.

Statements of 3 leaders on boycott of Foundation Day

  • CM Omar Abdullah: Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a Union Territory for long. We will take back our statehood. We are working to meet the needs of electricity, roads, water and employment. If we have no identity, then these development works have no meaning.
  • Former CM Mehbooba Mufti: This is not Foundation Day, but a black day for Jammu and Kashmir. This is not a sign of development, but of keeping away rights. It will remain a black day until statehood is achieved.
  • Congress State President Tariq Karra: Any sensitive person in Jammu and Kashmir, who understands the difference between a Union Territory and a state, will never celebrate this day. Congress has never recognized Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory in its heart and we will continue to struggle for statehood.
