A proposal was brought in the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday regarding ceasefire in Gaza but it could not be passed. Because America vetoed it. US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood said that Washington has made it clear that it will only support the resolution that talks about the immediate release of hostages under the ceasefire.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Parvataneni Harish put forth his point very boldly on the issue of veto power in the United Nations Security Council in the United Nations General Assembly. Harish said, ‘During the last eight decades, all five permanent members of the Council have used the veto to achieve their respective political objectives. During this period, the veto has been used about 200 times.
India’s roar, raised questions about the veto
Harish put forth India’s stand on the veto and said, ‘Mr. Chairman, India’s stand on the veto has been that as long as the veto exists, all permanent members should use it in the matter of fairness and justice. Referring to the wider implications of the existence of the veto, Harish said, ‘The use of the veto has been a provision available to only five member countries, although this is against the concept of sovereign equality of UN member countries’. Calling for a comprehensive approach to reform, Harish further said, ‘Therefore, we strongly urge that all five aspects of UN Security Council reform, including the question of veto, should be addressed in a comprehensive manner through clearly defined timelines in the IGN process’.
Now understand what is veto?
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. It is the most powerful branch or sub-group of the UN. It has 15 members and there are two types of membership – one permanent and the other temporary i.e. non-permanent. Five out of 15 countries are its permanent members. Apart from this, there are 10 such countries, which change every two years. India has become its non-permanent member many times.
Which five countries have veto power?
Its powers include contribution to peace missions, implementation of international sanctions and military action on the resolutions of the Security Council. Currently, five permanent members of the UNSC have veto power. These include America, Britain, Russia, France and China. Veto power means the ability to stop any decision. Understand it like this, if any one of the five countries wants to stop any decision, then it can stop that decision by using veto power.
Benefit to India from getting veto?
India has been wanting to become its permanent member for a long time, because as soon as India becomes its permanent member, India’s power in the world will increase. Not only this, the country will also get the power of veto, due to which India will be able to directly interfere in international matters. This will also give India many diplomatic benefits at the global level. The claim of the country’s increasing power will once again get an official stamp.
