After the coup of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria, the newly elected US President Donald Trump has started pressuring Vladimir Putin for a Ukraine ceasefire. The Syrian Assad government was supported by Russia, after the fall of the government, Russia’s position in the Middle East has weakened. Trump’s statement seems to indicate that he wants to take advantage of this and increase pressure on Russia.
Referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump wrote on social media, “Zelensky and Ukraine would like to reach an agreement.” In a television interview on Sunday, Trump also said that he is ready to reduce military aid to Ukraine and pull the US out of NATO. These are two threats that have worried many people in Ukraine, NATO allies and the US national security community.
Trump serious about Ukraine ceasefire
In an interview on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’, Trump was asked if he is actively working to end the nearly 3-year-old Ukraine war? Trump said, “I am.” He declined to say whether he had spoken to Putin since winning the election in November. Trump said, “I don’t want to say anything about it, because I don’t want to do anything that would hinder the conversation.” Trump’s call for an immediate ceasefire goes beyond the decisions taken by both the Biden administration and Ukraine. Because recently the Biden administration has increased military aid to Ukraine. Trump’s statement shows that he is making deep efforts to end the Ukraine war before he takes over on January 20, 2025. After winning the US election, Donald Trump has reached France, where he met Emmanuel Macron and Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, during which it is believed that there was a discussion between the three leaders about the war.
