Turkey opened a new front in Syria as soon as Assad government fell, launched a fierce attack on US-backed Kurds, will Biden protect them?
Turkey has attacked Kurdish forces amid the civil war in Syria. This attack took place in the eastern Aleppo province. The Turkish army and Turkish-backed militia attacked the US-backed Kurdish forces, SDF. Both Turkey and the US have been opponents of the Assad government but their interests are different on the issue of Kurds. The US considers the Kurds as allies in the fight against ISIS. At the same time, Turkey links the Kurds to the terrorist organization PKK. The Turkish government blames the PKK for spreading terror on its land.
According to the Firstpost report, the UK-based war monitoring organization SOHR and Kurdish forces have reported that the Turkish army and Turkish-backed militia attacked US-backed Kurdish forces in the eastern Aleppo province. Turkey has opened this new front against the Kurds amid chaos and uncertainty in Syria after Assad’s ouster from power. The Kurds control northeastern Syria under the AANES and are a special ally of the US. In such a situation, the US government can also react to this.
22 killed in attack
SOHR and the Kurds have said that the Turkish-backed SNA is a group made up of mercenaries and former criminal groups. Fighters from this group attacked the SDF in the city of Manbij in eastern Aleppo on Saturday. The SDF told The New York Times that the SNA’s ground attack was carried out by Turkish fighter jets and drones, killing 22 SDF men and injuring 40. SOHR has reported that in a second incident, a Turkish suicide drone attacked a Kurdish military base.
Devora Margolin, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, says that Turkey wants to change the map of Syria according to its interests amid the chaos of Assad’s removal from power. Turkey has a long history of attacking Kurds in Syria’s northern border areas. Turkey has constantly tried to push the Kurds away from the border and establish a buffer zone.
Margolin says that while Syria is surrounded by uncertainty, Turkey is trying to use it for its own benefit. Türkiye and its proxy SNA want to change the map of Syria. They are using the current moment to seize power and weaken the SDF.
