“Hanging a dumbbell on private part, attacking with a compass…” Brutal incident of ragging in a government college in Kerala

Five senior students of a government nursing college in Kerala have been arrested on charges of ragging. The accused are third year students. They are accused of physically and mentally harassing their juniors for several months. According to the allegations, they stripped the first year students naked and forced them to stand like that and hung dumbbells on their private parts.

The incident took place in a nursing college located in Kottayam. According to a report by news agency PTI, the police have registered a case on the basis that incidents of ragging have been going on in the college for about three months. It started in November last year. Three victim students have lodged a complaint at the Kottayam Gandhinagar police station.

According to the NDTV report, the victims have told in the complaint what happened to them during these three months. They told that the accused attacked them with the compass of the geometry box and other sharp objects. After this, a burning lotion was applied on the wounds. When the victims started screaming in pain, the accused applied the same lotion in their mouths.

It is alleged that the seniors made a video of these incidents. They threatened the victims that if they dared to complain about it, they would have to face dire consequences. The accused said that they would ruin the future of the victims.

The complaint also stated that the accused used to collect money for liquor from their juniors every Sunday. Those who refused to do so were brutally beaten up. When one of the victim students could not bear the harassment, he told his father about it. The victim’s father encouraged him to approach the police.

After the complaint, the accused have also been suspended from the college and arrested under the Anti Ragging Act.

Some time ago, a 15-year-old school student in Kochi committed suicide due to ragging. The student’s mother had alleged that her son was treated cruelly.
