Uttarakhand: Hearing on the matter of not holding elections of Kichha Nagar Palika, High Court asked this question to the government

Even after the reservation was decided, the matter of not holding the election of Kichha Nagar Palika by the government was heard in the Nainital High Court. In the case, the division bench of Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Alok Mehra has asked the state government to explain within two days why the elections were not held when the reservation has been decided?

During the hearing today, the petitioner informed the court that for the last one and a half years, the work of Kichha Nagar Palika is in the hands of the administrator. All the work is being done by the administrator. Elections of all the municipalities have been held, but the elections of Kichha Nagar Palika have not been held yet.

In fact, Naimul Hussain, a resident of Kichha, has filed a petition in the Nainital High Court. In which it has been said that on December 14, 2024, the government had issued a notification of proposed reservation for 43 Nagar Palika President posts in the state and sought objections from the general public in it, but the reservation of Kichha Nagar Palika President was not mentioned in this notification. Due to which it was feared that the government wants to postpone the municipal elections there.

Apart from this, according to the reservation allocation rules, reservation will be determined on the basis of roster according to the number of posts of the Municipal President, but the government decided the roster on the basis of 43 Municipal President posts only.

According to the petitioners, the government had earlier merged some wards of Kichha Municipality with villages. On which the High Court had put a stay. After which the government merged these areas again with the Municipality, but now efforts are being made to postpone the municipal elections there.

Earlier the court had asked the government to decide the reservation of Kichha Municipality. Now the reservation has also been decided, but the election has not been held. Therefore, the election of Kichha Municipality should be held soon. On which the court has now asked the government that why the elections were not held after deciding the reservation?
