There is no exemption of any kind in property tax… People of Delhi, what has happened?

Delhiites will not get any concession in property tax. MCD says that no exemption or concession has been given to anyone in the payment of property tax. MCD has issued this clarification regarding the wrong information being circulated on different media platforms and social media regarding exemption from property tax. MCD has appealed to all property owners and occupiers to deposit property tax within the stipulated time limit. Lest they have to pay interest and penalty on property tax due to the greed of exemption.

MCD says that they were constantly getting questions from people like whether they have to pay property tax or not? Therefore, MCD clarified the situation and said that paying property tax is mandatory for all occupiers and owners. No change has been made in its mandatory nature. Property tax is an important source of revenue for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which accounts for about one-fourth of the total revenue. Under the annual budget process, the corporation determines the rates of tax and fees every year. For the financial year 2024-25, it was decided as per the budget passed in February 2024. Similarly, in the meeting held on 13 February 2025, the corporation has taken decisions regarding taxes and fees for the financial year 2025-26.

MCD facing financial challenges

Officials say that the MCD is currently facing serious financial challenges, with liabilities of more than ₹ 14,000 crore remaining. This includes the payment of salaries of municipal employees, retirement benefits, and dues of contractors. If the financial stability and accountability of the corporation is not ensured, it will become difficult to maintain cleanliness, maintenance of roads, streets and drainage systems and maintain essential civic services. Given these financial constraints, there is neither any legal basis nor any financial justification for giving exemption in property tax. Therefore, all property owners should deposit property tax on the basis of self-assessment on or before 31 March 2025.
