Who is Hafiz Saeed?

Hafiz Saeed is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD). He has been the mastermind of many major terrorist attacks in India. Hafiz Saeed is also the main accused of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in which 166 people lost their lives.

Hafiz Saeed was born in 1950 in Sargodha district of Punjab province of Pakistan. He did his studies from Pakistan’s University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore. Then from Pakistan he went to Saudi Arabia, where he got the opportunity to adopt radical Islamic ideology. In the 1980s, he took training in terrorist activities along with jihadists in Afghanistan.

Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorism

In the 1990s, Hafiz Saeed founded Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was supported by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. This organization was involved in terrorist activities against India and carried out many terrorist attacks in Kashmir. In 2002, India and America declared Lashkar a terrorist organization, after which Hafiz Saeed formed a new organization named Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD). However, this organization was also found involved in terrorism related matters.

The United Nations has declared Hafiz Saeed a global terrorist and the US has placed a bounty of $10 million (about Rs 83 crore) on him. The Pakistan government also took some action against him for show, but always tried to protect him.

In 2019, after Pakistan’s name appeared in the FATF gray list, Pakistan arrested Hafiz Saeed in a terror funding case and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. However, this was just a result of international pressure, as Pakistan has often provided him protection.
