Israel has blown up Gaza’s only cancer hospital in an airstrike. A nearby medical school has also come under the grip of this attack. The Israeli attacks were so accurate that the cancer hospital and medical school were completely destroyed. This attack has been condemned by European countries including Middle Eastern countries. These countries claim that medical facilities cannot be attacked under international law. However, Israel claims that these places are being used as Hamas command centers and weapons warehouses.
Turkish-Palestinian friendship hospital destroyed
Friday’s explosion devastated the Turkish-Palestinian friendship hospital in central Gaza, which was already badly damaged by Israeli airstrikes since October 2023. Footage posted online shows a huge ball of fire and smoke rising from the place after the Israeli army attacked. This came after Israel announced it was expanding its operation in the so-called Netzarim Corridor near the hospital, and blocked all movement on Salah al-Din Street.
Gaza’s only hospital for cancer patients
Al Jazeera correspondent Tariq Abu Azzum, reporting from Deir al-Balah in Gaza, said the destruction has left thousands of patients in the besieged region with nowhere to go for cancer treatment, while deadly Israeli military operations have resumed. The third floor of the hospital was previously hit by an Israeli airstrike on October 30, 2023. The hospital was forced to close on November 1, 2023 due to a fuel shortage, while the United Nations warned that the lives of 70 patients were at risk. It was later revealed that four patients had died at the hospital due to lack of medical care.
Rebuilt with Turkish help
“It has been completely blown up after being rebuilt in 2017 with a $34 million donation by Turkey,” Al Jazeera’s Abu Azzum said. Israel later confirmed it had destroyed the cancer hospital, and claimed it was used by Hamas. However, Israel has not provided any evidence related to this. At the same time, the Israeli army says that it will not rest until it has eliminated Hamas from the Gaza Strip.
Turkey condemned the Israeli attack
Turkey has condemned Israel’s air strike. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, calling it “part of Israel’s policy aimed at making Gaza uninhabitable and forcibly displacing the Palestinian people.” The ministry said, “We call on the international community to take concrete and preventive measures against Israel’s unlawful attacks and systematic state terrorism.” The Gaza Health Ministry also condemned Israel’s “behavior”, which it said was “consistent with the systematic destruction of the health system and the completion of episodes of genocide.”
