As soon as the proceedings of Rajya Sabha started today (21 March), the issue of the pile of notes found in the house of Delhi High Court judge was raised. Raising this matter, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh told the Chairman that 55 members have written a letter to you demanding that the central government take necessary steps to increase the accountability of the judiciary.

A fire broke out in the government bungalow of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Verma. He was not at home. In such a situation, the family immediately called the fire brigade and the police. While controlling the fire, the fire brigade personnel saw a large pile of notes inside the bungalow. After this, this matter reached the senior officials and then the matter reached the Supreme Court.

Immediate transfer of Justice Yashwant Verma

When the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna came to know about this, he immediately called a meeting of the collegium and transferred Justice Yashwant Verma from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court. Justice Verma was earlier posted in Allahabad High Court.

What will happen next?

Will this matter end with the transfer or will further action be taken against Justice Verma? This will depend on what the Supreme Court concludes in its own investigation. It is possible that if Justice Yashwant Verma is unable to save himself in the investigation, he may be asked to resign. If he does not resign, an impeachment can be brought against him in the Parliament. Let us tell you that there is a provision to remove a Supreme Court or High Court judge from his post only by bringing impeachment.

After Justice Yashwant Verma’s removal from the post, the possibility of other action against him cannot be ruled out. For now, it will be interesting to see what steps the Supreme Court takes in this entire matter.
