A powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude hit the island country of Tonga, located in Polynesia. Due to this, the Meteorological Department has issued a tsunami warning in this Pacific island country. In this regard, the American organization – US Geological Survey (USGS) said, the earthquake occurred about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north-east of the main island on Monday morning local time. At present, there is no report of any casualties.
Dangerous waves can rise on the sea coasts
Tonga is more than 3,500 kilometers (2,000 miles) from the east coast of Australia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center located in the US state of Hawaii said that dangerous waves can rise on the sea coasts located within 300 kilometers (185 miles) from the epicenter of the earthquake.
