Uttarakhand: 4.17 lakh voters increased in 12 districts for Gram Panchayat elections, participation increased despite migration

Amidst the migration from the villages of Uttarakhand, the increased number of voters in the Gram Panchayats is giving some relief. In view of the possible Panchayat elections in May in the remaining 12 districts of the state except Haridwar, the State Election Commission got the voter list of the Panchayats revised. After this, 47,32,387 voters have been included in the provisional list released.
This number of voters is 4,17,727 more than last time. According to the data of the Commission, the number of voters in the Panchayat elections held in the year 2019 was 43,14,660. Not only this, the names which are still missing or are erroneous have also been given a chance to correct them. A special campaign is going on to correct the voter list.
Since the formation of the state, the three-tier Panchayat elections in Haridwar district are not held along with other districts. The elections of Haridwar have been held along with UP. The last Panchayat elections there were held in the year 2022. In the remaining 12 districts, administrators were appointed after the five-year term of the panchayats ended in December last year.
Along with this, the reorganization and delimitation of gram panchayats in view of the panchayat elections, delimitation of constituencies of three-tier panchayats (village, area and district) has been completed. The voter lists of the panchayats have been revised and now the work of improvement is going on in them.
If we look at the revised provisional voter list of 12 districts, the number of voters in gram panchayats has increased by 9.68 percent in six years. Voters have increased in Pauri and Almora districts, which are most affected by migration. If we look at the data, this time 14 gram panchayats have also increased compared to last time. In the year 2019, there were 7485 gram panchayats in 12 districts, which has now increased to 7499.
Increase of 10 to 18 percent in four districts
According to the data of the State Election Commission, the number of voters has increased between 10.45 to 18.07 percent in Dehradun, Nainital, Uttarkashi and Udham Singh Nagar districts. In the other eight districts, the number of voters has increased from 5.19 percent to 9.68 percent.
Special campaign is going on for improvement
According to State Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar, a special campaign is going on to improve the voter lists of panchayats in other districts except Haridwar. After its completion, further increase in the number of voters is possible.
