544 accident prone sites marked on Chardham Yatra routes, NHAI sent letter to PWD and BRO

The government has started extensive preparations to make the upcoming Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand smooth and safe. Under this, 544 such places have been identified on the Chardham Yatra routes in the four major districts of the state – Dehradun, Tehri, Chamoli and Haridwar, which are very sensitive from the accident point of view. These places have been identified on the basis of surveys conducted by road safety committees.
The Transport Headquarters has sent a letter to the National Highway Authority (NHAI), Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Public Works Department (PWD) regarding these accident prone sites and directed them to resolve them soon. Along with this, these departments have also been asked to complete the work and submit a report.
Road safety committees in Dehradun, Tehri, Chamoli and Haridwar districts have conducted an intensive survey and identified such places where there is a possibility of accidents due to road design, lack of signals, blind turns, broken barriers, potholes, debris etc. According to the report, Tehri district has the highest number of accident prone spots at 297, while 144 have been identified in Dehradun’s Vikasnagar and Rishikesh area, 65 in Chamoli and 38 in Haridwar.
To make these routes safe, corrective measures like traffic calming measures, rumble strips, warning signs, mirrors on blind curves, repair or installation of crash barriers, reflectors and markings on the road, filling of potholes, removal of debris and closing of unauthorized medians have been recommended. All the concerned departments have been instructed to complete this work within the stipulated time frame so that the pilgrims can travel safely during the Chardham Yatra.
