The police of Agra in Uttar Pradesh on Friday registered a case against about 60 people who protested outside the Jama Masjid after animal meat was found from the mosque premises. The incident took place late Thursday night when a person named Nazaruddin allegedly kept a packet full of animal meat inside the Jama Masjid located in the Mantola area of the city, but the matter came to light on Friday morning, causing tension in the area before Friday prayers. According to the police, CCTV footage showed Nazaruddin coming to the mosque on a scooter and placing the packet inside the premises before leaving. A team of more than 100 policemen was deployed to investigate the matter and secure the area. The meat was seized and sent to a forensic lab for examination.
He said the scooty used in the act was spotted in front of a local meat shop. After questioning the shopkeeper, they found the accused, Najruddin, a resident of Teela Nandram area in Agra. He was arrested on Friday and the police are now investigating whether he did it alone or someone else was with him. Additional Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Tyagi said action will be taken against the accused under the National Security Act (NSA). He said, “We are investigating the motive behind this act and whether more people were involved in it or not.”
Soon after Friday prayers, a group of people gathered outside the mosque and started demanding death penalty for the accused. The situation worsened so much that the police had to use mild force to disperse the crowd. In view of the situation, security was increased in and around the Jama Masjid. Police patrolling was increased to prevent any disturbance in the communally sensitive area. Officials have urged residents to maintain peace and not pay heed to rumours.
