The pride walk held across the country in support of the rights and identity of the LGBTQ+ community is now making its strong presence felt in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. A large number of youth, social workers and various organizations participated in the pride walk organized at the Parade Ground on Sunday.
The journey of Pride Walk from Kolkata to Dehradun
Pride walk in India started in Kolkata in the year 1999, when it was known as “The Friendship Walk”. Since then, this movement has spread to dozens of cities in the country. During the pride walk, the participants marched on the streets of the city with rainbow flags, posters and slogans. Messages like ‘Love is Love’, ‘Equality for All’, ‘Trans Rights are Human Rights’ were written in their hands.
The struggle for legal recognition continues
The LGBTQ+ community in India is gradually getting social acceptance, yet many legal hurdles remain. Let us tell you that in 2023, the Supreme Court refused to give legal recognition to gay marriage, which definitely caused disappointment in the community, but did not lose courage. Activists say this fight is not just for rights, but also for respect.
