Madhya Pradesh: Methane gas leaks from GAIL plant in Raisen, panic in the area

Methane gas leaked from a plant of state-owned GAIL in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district, causing panic in the area. Officials said the leak from the plant located close to the state capital Bhopal was later stopped and there were no casualties.

Officials said that as a precautionary measure, traffic on the road leading to the plant was temporarily stopped and production was immediately stopped in all industrial units around the gas plant.

Ban on industry within a radius of 200 meters

Methane is a highly flammable and odorless gas. The incident took place at around 2 am at the GAIL plant in Mandideep industrial town of Raisen district, 35 km from the state capital Bhopal. Sub-divisional Magistrate Chandrashekhar Srivastava said about the incident that after the leak of methane gas, production was immediately stopped in all units within a radius of 200 meters of the GAIL plant.

The divisional magistrate said that as a precaution, traffic was also stopped on the surrounding road. The official said that there was a leak of methane gas, which flew into the air. No one has lost their lives in this. He said that all the security arrangements are being checked.

Vigilance is being observed

The divisional magistrate said that at present the production from the plant is closed. He said that teams of government officials have been deployed there since night for security reasons. They are making extensive security arrangements in the GAIL plant. Rajiv Aggarwal, President of Mandideep Udyog Sangh, said that there has been a leak of ‘level-3’ gas in the GAIL plant.

The divisional magistrate further said that there has been no loss of life and vigilance is being observed. He said that experts are checking the plant and the leaking bulb has been repaired.
