The direct impact of the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan is now clearly visible on digital content as well. On May 8, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) issued an important advisory and directed all OTT platforms and social media companies to stop showing any kind of Pakistani content in India.

‘Made in Pakistan’ will not run in India, ban imposed

The government has made it clear that Pakistani web series, films, songs, podcasts and all other types of streaming content come under the purview of this ban. Whether it is running for free or through subscription… now it will not be allowed to be shown in India.

What is said in the advisory?

The advisory states – “In the interest of national security, all digital platforms are expected to stop the broadcast of any digital content produced in Pakistan in India with immediate effect.”

The government has also given a big reason behind this decision – many government and non-government elements present in Pakistan are repeatedly carrying out terrorist activities against India. Recently, the Pahalgam attack on 22 April was also mentioned in which many Indian and Nepali citizens lost their lives.

IT Rules cited

The government also mentioned the IT Rules 2021, especially Rule 3(1)(b) of Part-III and Part-II. It states that it is the responsibility of all digital intermediaries i.e. social media and OTT platforms to not allow any such information or content on their platforms which poses a threat to the unity, security, sovereignty or public order of the country. The government has made it clear without any leniency that now Pakistan’s cultural infiltration inside the country will not be tolerated. Even if it is on the screen.
