Russian President Putin proposes direct talks with Ukraine without preconditions

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday proposed resuming direct talks with Ukraine “without any preconditions” in Istanbul on May 15, raising the prospects of a ceasefire. The US has long been trying to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but has been unsuccessful so far.

Speaking to reporters in the Kremlin on Sunday morning, Putin proposed “resume” peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. His remarks came after the leaders of four major European countries threatened to increase pressure on Putin if he did not accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, which he offered on Saturday in a strong show of unity with Kiev.
