Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s statements on India-Pakistan tensions. He has accused Trump of undermining India’s national interests and promoting global perceptions in favor of Pakistan. Tharoor has described Trump’s recent comments on the Kashmir issue as ‘deeply disappointing’ for India. He warned that this could put diplomatic progress achieved over decades at risk. Tharoor said in his post on social media X that Trump’s comments are disappointing for India for four important reasons. They have weakened India’s long-standing stand on cross-border terrorism and Kashmir.

What kind of equality between victim and criminal

First, Tharoor says that Trump’s statements show a false equivalence between victim and criminal. It seems that America has forgotten its earlier stand against Pakistan’s links with cross-border terrorism. Tharoor said, ‘This shows a false equivalence between victim and criminal. The US seems to have forgotten its earlier stance against Pakistan’s links with cross-border terrorism.’

Why should India talk to terrorists?

Secondly, Tharoor said that by proposing talks, Trump has given Pakistan the legitimacy it did not have. He wrote, ‘India will never talk to a terrorist with a gun to its temple.’ This means that India will not negotiate under pressure from terrorists.

The US should not become a chauvinist between India and Pakistan

Thirdly, Tharoor warned against Trump’s proposal to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. He said that Trump’s intervention promotes the agenda of terrorist groups who want to take the Kashmir issue to the international level. Tharoor wrote, ‘India has never sought and will never seek mediation by any foreign country on its problems with Pakistan.’

No US president has done so

Fourthly, Tharoor said that Trump’s comments bring India and Pakistan together again on the global level. He said that for decades, world leaders have been put in a framework of not combining visits to India and Pakistan. This started in 2000 with President Clinton. No US President has done so since then. According to Tharoor, this is a very retrograde step.

What did Trump say on Kashmir issue

Tharoor’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. India has always maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral issue and does not welcome any third party intervention in the matter. On Monday, Trump again claimed that he used trade to prevent a conflict between two ‘nuclear-armed’ countries. Trump made this claim while addressing the media at the White House. He reiterated his earlier statement that his administration helped bring about a ‘complete and immediate ceasefire’ between India and Pakistan. According to Tharoor, these statements of Trump are disappointing for India, as they give undue importance to Pakistan, bring the Kashmir issue to the international stage, and weigh India and Pakistan on the same scale.
