According to the press note issued by the Union Home Ministry, the first phase of the caste census will start from October 1, 2026.

According to the Union Home Ministry, it was also proposed to conduct Census 2021 in two phases in the same way. The first phase was to be conducted during April-September 2020 and the second phase in February 2021. All preparations for the first phase of the census to be conducted in 2021 were completed and field work was scheduled to start in some states/union territories from April 1, 2020. However, the census work had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country.
