Amid the Russia and Ukraine conflict, a big statement by US President Donald Trump has come to the fore. Where Trump said that perhaps it is better to let Ukraine and Russia fight a little, then separate the two and move towards peace. Trump said this during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. To which Merz replied that Germany stands with Ukraine and is only targeting military bases.

Let us tell you that the two leaders held a face-to-face conversation for the first time, although there have been discussions over the phone several times before. During this, Merz presented Trump with the German birth certificate of his grandfather Friedrich Trump. Merz is Angela Merkel’s successor in German politics and also has a deep connection with the business sector.

Trump hinted at imposing strict sanctions on Russia and Ukraine

During the meeting, Trump indicated that if the war does not stop, he could impose strict sanctions on both Russia and Ukraine. He also reiterated the demand for 5% spending on NATO from Germany, which was earlier 2%. However, Merz said that he would continue helping Ukraine. He also said that he would provide full funding to build Europe’s strongest conventional army. Not only this, Merz supported the plan to spend 3.5% on defense budget and 1.5% on infrastructure by 2032.

Trump reiterated his tariff policy

Along with this, Trump reiterated the talk of 25% tariff on vehicles being exported from Germany to America, which could affect German vehicle companies. On this, Merz clearly said that tariffs are harmful for everyone, but the European Union itself makes trade agreements. It is worth noting that in recent months, a speech by US Vice President JD Vance also increased tensions, in which he questioned the democratic status of Germany. Merz called this comment unacceptable.
