There was a ruckus in Bhagwanpur block of Haridwar on Monday when Block Development Officer (BDO) Alok Gargi suddenly postponed the meeting before the scheduled BDC annual meeting could begin. The matter became more serious when the BDO took away the meeting register and announced the adjournment of the meeting without any clear reason.

Uproar over cancellation of Bhagwanpur BDC meeting

In protest against this decision of the BDO, Congress MLA Mamta Rakesh, BJP-supported block chief Karuna Cornwal, village heads and area panchayat members raised slogans outside the BDO office. MLA Mamta Rakesh surrounded the BJP government, calling this incident against democracy. The MLA said that the BJP gives the slogan of “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”, but in Bhagwanpur, their own party is doing injustice to the Dalit woman block chief.

Block chief threatens to commit suicide

At the same time, BJP-supported block chief Karuna Cornwal became emotional with this entire incident. While talking to the media, she cried and said, “Why am I being treated like this? Is it a crime to be a Dalit and a woman?” She alleged that the BDO is working under pressure and the meeting is not being allowed to take place deliberately. Cornwall warned that if this continues, she will take all the BDC members and village heads along with her to the CM residence and commit suicide there.
