During summers, the number of tourists in Uttarakhand’s capital Dehradun is constantly increasing. People come to the hidden waterfalls and river banks to have fun with friends and family. But some people are coming here not just to relax but also to spread garbage. Especially at natural places like Shikhar Falls, tourists bring food items and throw garbage around the waterfalls, due to which both the natural beauty and the water source are getting dirty.

Women took charge of cleaning

The local people living near Shikhar Falls, especially women, have now taken up the responsibility of cleaning themselves. They collect the garbage here every day and take it to the village and then get it disposed of properly.

Local resident Suresh Bhandari says, “Our Uttarakhand is known for clean environment and natural beauty. But when tourists come here, they throw food waste around the waterfalls. When we explain to them, many times people start quarreling with us.” Cleanliness drive is being run

Suresh Bhandari and his family along with many women of the area are running cleanliness drive every morning and evening. Along with this, awareness is also being created among people through posters and workshops. He says that some people not only spread dirt, but also make the water even more dirty by using shampoo and soap while bathing in the waterfall.

Tourists are creating problems

Local people say that earlier this area was very clean and peaceful. But as the number of tourists increased, dirt and problems also increased. Birds are even being hunted here, which is posing a threat to the local biodiversity. Local people want the government to pay attention to this issue and increase monitoring and strictness at places like trekking and waterfalls. If cleanliness and awareness are not taken seriously in time, then in the coming time, the natural heritage of Dehradun may lose its identity.
