Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner has been in the fleet of many major airlines of the world for the last 14 years and this is the first time it has been a victim of an accident. Let us know about the relationship of Dreamliner with Indian airlines and its journey so far.

Relationship with Indian Airlines

Currently Air India and Indigo Airlines are operating B 787 aircraft. Out of 34 B787s in Air India’s fleet, 27 B787-8 are old aircraft. The first B787-8 will be sent for retrofit in July. The remaining seven B 787-9s joined Air India’s fleet after its merger with Vistara last year. The Dreamliner has 18 business class seats and 238 economy class seats. The aircraft has done about 8,000 takeoffs and landings.

Order for 20 additional aircraft

Air India is expanding its fleet and foreign network. It has ordered 20 additional B787 aircraft and has an option to order 24 more. Recently, IndiGo has started operating B787s leased from Norse Atlantic. IndiGo is going to lease a total of six such aircraft for long-haul operations.

Air India had stopped fleet operations

A few years ago, the US monitoring agency Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had stopped the delivery of Dreamliner due to some problems. Talking about India, Air India had to face some problems with the Dreamliner in 2013 due to battery problems. Due to this, the then government-owned Air India also had to stop the flights of its Dreamliner fleet for some time. At that time the airlines had about six such aircraft. Air India also received compensation from Boeing for these problems.

Three models of Dreamliner

The three models of Dreamliner are 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10. The 787-8 model has a range of 13,530 km. The aircraft is 57 meters long, 17 meters high and has a wingspan of 60 meters. The Dreamliner has launched more than 425 non-stop routes around the world. Most of these routes were not operated.
