Gas leakage continues in ONGC well even after three days, 70 families shifted to safer places

The gas leak in a well of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Shiv Sagar district of Sam continued for the fourth day. Officials said that 70 families have been shifted to relief camps. He said that a team led by ONGC Director (Technology and Field Services) Vikram Saxena on Saturday took over the operational control of well number RDS 147, where the leak started.
What is being done to control the leak?
An official said, “The process of destroying the well is going on and we have mobilized all the necessary equipment for this. The Crisis Management Team (CMT) is working on a war footing to control the leak.” He said that the well has not caught fire yet and there have been no casualties in the incident. This gas leak occurred on June 12 in well number RDS 147A of rig number SKP 135 of ONGC’s Rudrasagar oil field in Barichuk of Bhatiapar. SK Petro Services, a private firm, was operating the well on behalf of the public sector ‘Maharatna’ company.
How many people affected by the gas leak?
A senior district administration official said that around 1,500 people have been affected by the incident. He said, “They are smelling gas and are not able to light their stove or anything. We are providing them cooked food and are constantly monitoring the situation.” The district administration said on social media platform Facebook that 70 families from the area have been shifted to a relief camp set up in nearby Bangaon and all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure their convenience and well-being.
The administration said, “At present, doctors from the Health Department and Animal Husbandry Department are present at the spot. They are checking the health condition of people and their pets.” Earlier, an ONGC official had said that it was an old crude oil well which was not producing.
