Have you transferred money through UPI by mistake? Don’t panic, this is how you can get it back

Digital payments have made people’s lives easier. Now you don’t need to carry money in your pocket. With the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), you can easily make payments anywhere and anytime. With this, money can be transferred to anyone in a few seconds.

But the easier it is, the greater is the risk of mistakes. Many times when we make payments in a hurry, the money gets transferred to a wrong UPI ID. In such a situation, if this has happened to you too, then do not panic. You can get your money back by following these easy steps.

Talk directly first

If you can see the mobile number of the person or you have the number of the person to whom the money has gone, then first talk to him. Ask him politely to return the money. If you do not have a mobile number or that person is saying that I will not give you your money, then do not panic. Do not resort to violence at all. You should file a complaint.

Register a complaint

Open UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM through which you have made a wrong payment. Select the wrong transaction in the transaction history and select the option Report a problem or Raise a dispute. After this, fill in the details like transaction ID, date and amount.

Definitely inform the bank

As soon as you make this mistake, contact your bank. Inform the bank about this by going to the bank’s customer care or the branch near your home. The bank has a solution to these problems. They can start the reversal process of complaints related to UPI transactions.

Register a complaint with NPCI

If you are not getting any help from the app or the bank, then the next step is NPCI i.e. National Payments Corporation of India. You should go here. Register your complaint by visiting their website npci.org.in. Along with the complaint, you will have to submit your transaction information and supporting documents screenshots or bank statements etc.

Make a final appeal to RBI

If your case is not resolved even after a month, then there is no need to panic. You can contact RBI’s digital payment ombudsman. You can finalize your complaint online on RBI’s CMS portal. This option is for when the amount is large. Also, there is no solution from the previous option.

Let’s know how to avoid such mistakes in UPI transfer?

  • Check the UPI ID at least twice before putting money.
  • Whenever you put money in a new ID, just for security, check the name of the receiver once.
  • Also pay attention while scanning the QR code.
