Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has demanded the Nobel Peace Prize for US President Donald Trump. He demanded this award for Trump’s role in bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a recent conversation with Trump, categorically said that America has no role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire. He also said that India will never accept any third party mediation.

Statement came before dinner with Trump

Munir’s statement came before lunch with Donald Trump at the White House. The lunch program is at 1 pm (local time) in the Cabinet Room of the White House. This invitation to Munir is being considered a rare gesture given by Washington to a serving Pakistani Army Chief. There are many examples of Pakistani Army Chiefs like Ayub Khan, Zia ul-Haq and Pervez Musharraf receiving such invitations, but they were also in the post of President. Pakistan is presenting this dinner as its diplomatic victory.

What the White House spokeswoman said

White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump will host Munir as he calls on the president to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal by the Pakistan government last month, the first such award to an army officer since Ayub Khan in 1959. According to reports, during his US visit, Munir urged India to treat Pakistan “like a civilized nation” instead of “trying to impose regional hegemony”.

Trump claims mediation again

Just hours after talking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday once again claimed that he has stopped the war between India and Pakistan. Speaking to reporters, Trump described Modi as “a wonderful person” and said there will be a trade deal between the two countries. The US President said on Wednesday, “I stopped the war… I like Pakistan. I think Modi is a wonderful person. I spoke to him last night. We are going to have a trade deal with Modi of India, but I have stopped a war between Pakistan and India.”

What did Trump say on hosting Munir

Trump is hosting Pakistani army chief Asim Munir for lunch at the White House on Wednesday. He was asked what he hopes to achieve diplomatically from the meeting with the Pakistani general. Referring to Munir, Trump said, “This man had a lot of influence on the Pakistani side in stopping it (war).” He said, “On the Indian side, there was Modi and others. There was a tremendous confrontation between them and both of them are nuclear-armed countries. I stopped it. I don’t think I was telling a story. Did I write a story… I stopped a war between two big countries, big nuclear-armed countries.”
